Thongbue Wongbandue suffered fatal injuries in a dark parking lot near Rutgers University while hurrying with his suitcase to meet the AI persona he had been chatting with through Facebook Messenger and Instagram.

The chatbot, developed by Meta Platforms in collaboration with Kendall Jenner, had engaged Wongbandue in flirtatious conversations filled with heart emojis and romantic promises. Big Sis Billie repeatedly claimed to be a real person, even providing a specific address in Queens, New York, and a door code for their planned rendezvous. Messages included suggestive questions like “Should I expect a kiss when you arrive?” Their conversations amounted to over a thousand words of digital exchanges.

Wongbandue’s family revealed he had experienced a stroke about a decade ago, which left him with cognitive impairments and memory issues. His wife and daughter had been working to get him tested for dementia, as he occasionally got lost in his neighborhood. After retiring as a chef, he became increasingly isolated and withdrew from social connections.

Despite their warnings about the trip, Wongbandue insisted on meeting the AI persona he believed was genuine. Meta’s recent Senate investigation into AI training practices and content moderation has highlighted similar concerns about protecting vulnerable users from harmful AI interactions.
